DIR®/Floortime Summer Camp

Our goal is for the children in the camps to have fun and to develop play skills in rich interactions with peers. Each child is supported in a way to enable him or her to feel comfortable and successful in the ebb and flow of play with his/her peers.

  • The philosophy of the camp is Floortime with the focus on relating and social interaction with peers.
  • The camps are six weeks long – two days/week, 1 ½ hours each day.
Site:  Pacific Northwest Pediatric Therapy
4305 SE Milwaukie Avenue, Portland, OR 97202
Dates: Tuesday, June 30, 2009 through Thursday, August 6, 2009
Times: First Camp – Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
Second Camp – Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM

The Camp :  The camp space is set up with a variety of toys such as a dollhouse, cars, trains, dress up, and arts and crafts. The focus of the camp is for the children to engage in “free play” with their peers. The role of the staff is to facilitate engagement and interaction between the peers using the DIR/Floortime approach. The camp is not structured in the sense of the therapists and aides teaching skills, rather we facilitate each child’s functional emotional development during spontaneous play.

Staff :   Rebecca Peterson, OTR/L, Director of Pacific Northwest Pediatric Therapy and a Candidate in the DIR Certificate Program, will lead the group. She will have a staff of aides to support your child in engaging and interacting with his or her peers. All staff participates in DIR®/Floortime training prior to the camp and each day during the camp. Our goal is to have 1 aide to 3 children with Rebecca facilitating the group.

Parent Support/Training : There will be a parent meeting following at the conclusion of the camp to share progress made within the camps, answer questions and support parents in finding ways to integrate the DIR/Floortime model into their child’s daily life. The sessions will be video taped so that parents are able to share in the positive interactions that take place throughout the camps.

Clients New to Pacific NW Pediatric Therapy : Campers who are not currently clients in our practice will need to have a one hour individual intake session prior to the camp. At the time of the session we will observe your child’s play and interaction to develop an understanding of your child’s functional emotional development and individual profile so we can best meet his/her needs within the camp.  The fee for the individual intake session is $140. We ask that you please complete and return both the registration form and our intake questionnaire (you can access the questionnaire on our website at www.pedptot.com under New Client Info & Forms.) We will contact you to schedule the intake session before the camp starts.

Fees:  The fee is $1000 for this six-week camp.
